MARRS11 @ Summit Point – October 9-10th, 2010

October 15th, 2010
6:05 pm

At the last race of the year there were still many undecided championship battles in the WDCR MARRS 2010 season. After a long weekend of great weather, RP finished the season strong with # wins.

In SM, Ken Zalner pulled off a 1st place finish for the year, you can read the whole story here.

In SSM, Scott Brunk finished 1st in the championship race.

Dave Ade was crowned champion of SRX7 for a second year in a row.

Brian Price finished an impressive season with yet another ITA championship.

Also in ITA, Greg Gale pulled off a 3rd place season finish which was decided in the last race.

In his first year in ITS, Al Gervais captured the championship and had a total of 6 wins throughout the year.

All in all, it was another strong year for the RP team with 5 more championships across 5 classes. Special thanks to Bret and TJ for all of their help each weekend keeping the cars running strong! See you all next year…

Congrats to Ken Zalner on the 2010 WDCR SCCA MARRS SM Championship

October 10th, 2010
3:07 pm

As we approached the last race of the year there was still a three way battle for the top spot in SM between Ken Zalner, Scott Brunk and Kevin Kopp. The pressure was on all three drivers to perform at the top of their game this weekend.

The weekend started with Ken dropping a valve in the engine of the #73 SM on the 3rd lap of the first session of practice on Friday. Bret and Brian worked on the car until 6:00 pm to install a new engine and chase down two different water leaks and a defective pilot bearing in the transmission before getting the car rolling again, and onto the dyno it rolled.

The mechanical problems prevented Ken from running any sessions on practice day but the car was ready for qualifying… or so we thought. One lap into qualifying, the car shut off climbing the hill in Turn 9. Had the car shut off anywhere else on the track we would have completely missed qualifying altogether and would have had to start last. Ken carried the momentum and quickly ducked into the pits where TJ and Bret ran to see what they could find under the hood. After finding a broken wire on the cam sensor, TJ stripped it with his teeth and jammed it in the connector. Ken fired the car up and took off as we hoped for the best. Ken did manage to get in three hot laps and qualified 4th. After qualifying T.J. properly fixed the broken wire.

In the Saturday 10 lap race, Ken started 4th and pulled up 2 positions to finish 2nd, right behind teammate Scott Brunk, in an intense battle against the cars of Kopp, Jacobs and Collins who teamed up against Ken. The points battle was still on.

In the Sunday race, Ken pulled out a 3rd place finish but that wasn’t enough to determine the winner of the season. With Ken and Kevin tied with exactly 2500 points each a tie breaker was needed. It started as who had more wins (5 each, tie again) and then moved to 2nd place finishes (again, 3 each) and finally down to 3rd place finishes in which Ken had a 3 to 1 advantage on Kevin. In the end, 3rd place on Sunday was enough to win the 2010 MARRS SM championship.

Ken won his 10th career championship on 10/10/10. It was by far and away the closest championship battle we have ever been a part of making also the sweetest one as well. This whole season was made possible by the extremely hard work and entire team effort of RP Performance and Performance Auto Works!

MARRS8 @ NJMP Thunderbolt “Summer Thunder” August 21-22, 2010

August 22nd, 2010
6:26 pm

MARRS 8 brings us back to NJMP for the Summer Thunder event on the Thunderbolt track.

The SM battle put Ken and Scott in the number 2 and 3 qualifying positions for Saturday’s race which resulted in a 2nd and 4th place finish on Saturday which put them in position to get a 1st and 4th on Sunday, respectively.

Brian Price continues his domination in the ITA class with two 1st place finishes for the weekend and a new track record of 1:34.443 as a reward for his effort on Saturday.

In ITS, Al Gervais qualified 3rd, finished 2nd on Saturday’s race and even managed another 2nd place finish despite dropping 3rd gear in his transmission towards the end of the race on Sunday.

Kevin Hutchens managed a 2nd place finish in SRX7 on Sunday ahead of Dave Ade with tire choice making a big difference for the half wet/half dry session.

Dave Wible qualified 2nd and finished 3rd in the SSM race on Saturday while Scott Brunk continues to take a break from the class, because of his points lead, to concentrate on SM.

You can view the results at mylaps.com here.

MARRS7 @ Summit Point – August 8-9, 2010

August 10th, 2010
10:22 am

What a great weekend at the track. RP customers won in 5 classes and set 2 new track records in ITA and SSM. Ken Zalner and Scott Brunk won their respective classes of SM and SSM with Scott setting a new track record of 1:28.005 in his class.

Brian Price laid down a 1:25.073 hot lap while winning in ITA. In the same race group, Dave Ade continues to dominate the season in his SRX7. Al Gervais earned the 5th win for RP in his ITS 2nd gen RX7.

Other notable finishes include a 4th place finish for Kevin Hutchens in SRX and a 5th for Greg Gale in his ITA Miata.

Team RP now leads the points in all of the classes it races. Click here for a full summary of the points up to this race in the season. My Laps results can be viewed here and (provisional) SCCA results are here.

Even Bret had the chance to get out race this weekend in the SM class and there was some excitement at turn 10 during the race which almost took both him and Scott out of the action…

Finally, there was a sad goodbye to an SRX7 driver who passed away recently. The Group 5 race held a missing man honor lap for John Bittorf. A video showing the gauntlet of honor at pit-out is available here.

MARRS6 @ NJMP Lightning – July 10-11, 2010

July 15th, 2010
1:08 pm

RP held onto their strong points standing after a long and wet weekend at NJMP Lightning for the MARRS6 race which was run by the SJR SCCA.

With a solid points lead in SSM, Scott Brunk took the weekend off to concentrate on the SM battle for points. His double podium weekend, 2nd place finish on Saturday and 1st place on Sunday, keeps him in the lead for points in the MARRS SM series. Ken finished 3rd on Saturday but had trouble in Sunday’s race.

Brian “Rowdy” Price grabbed both the poll position and the win for Saturdays race as well as started 1st in the race on Sunday during which his oil pump died early in the race forcing him to retire with a DNF.

After missing the first half of the year, Kevin Hutchens is back in his SRX7 for his debut in the 2010 season. He had trouble on Saturday racing on dry tires in the rain which put him in a bad starting position for the Sunday race. After a bad start and loosing a few positions, he fought his way through traffic, trying to catch Brian Hair in the lead. Although he was closing in at the rate of 1/2 second a lap, there just wasn’t enough laps to make up the time and he finished 2nd place. You can watch the video in HD here.

The SJR SCCA results for both Saturday and Sunday are published here while this link takes you to the MyLaps results.
